If you are like me, you love spending as much time as you can outside in the summer.
Exposure to the elements can take a toll on our skin in the summer. Remember, the skin is our largest organ and the extra exposure to the sun can leave it feeling dry and dehydrated.
Using an aromatherapy body oil may help keep your skin nourished and moisturized this summer. There are several plant oils that are readily absorbed into the skin….and instead of leaving your skin feeling greasy, moisturize your skin all day long.
Five ingredients for a skin nourishing body oil
Apricot Kernel Oil
This gentle oil is cold-pressed from apricot kernels. Suitable for all skin types, especially mature, sensitive and dry skin. A light oil that is high in oleic (an omega 9 fatty acid) and linoleic acid (an omega 6 fatty acid). It may relieve itchy skin and be helpful for eczema too.
Jojoba liquid wax
Jojoba is a liquid wax pressed from the beans of the desert plant Simmondsia sinensis. Jojoba is similar to our skin’s sebum – the natural moisturizer produced by our bodies. It is not very greasy and helps to keep the skin soft and supple. It’s useful for treating eczema and inflammatory conditions.
Rice bran oil
Rice bran oil – Oryza sativa – is extracted from the bran or outer coat of the brown rice grain. It’s easily absorbed into the skin, deeply moisturizing and rich in nourishing components, like vitamin E and essential fatty acids. It’s also an incredibly affordable plant oil.
Organic lavender essential oil (Lavandula angustifolia)
Lavender essential oil is my “go to” essential oil in the summer. It is soothing to the skin and one of the most valuable essential oils for skin care. It stimulates the growth of new cells and is used to treat inflammations, eczema, insect bites, and sunburn. I consider it to be the “rescue remedy” of aromatherapy.
Organic rose geranium (Pelargonium roseum)
The scent of rose geranium essential oil is sweet and green – it has been described as leafy-rosy. It is a little more expensive than geranium essential oil (Pelargonium graveolens), but I definitely think it is worth it! Rose geranium essential oil has anti-inflammatory properties and helps with eczema and burns. It is a great essential oil for all skin types as it helps to balance the production of sebum.
Summer Body Oil Recipes
- 60 mL (1/4 cup) plant oil
- 24 drops of essential oil
Put ingredients in a glass bottle. Shake well. I like to use my body oil right after I’ve had a shower or a bath while my skin is still damp.
- 30 mL apricot kernel oil
- 15 mL jojoba liquid wax
- 15 mL rice bran oil
- 12 drops lavender essential oil
- 12 drops rose geranium essential oil
- 30 mL rice bran oil
- 30 mL apricot kernel oil
- 18 drops lavender essential oil
- 6 drops rose geranium essential oil
